I remember there was a bad snowstorm. School was cancelled. The evergreen trees were heavy with snow and falling on power lines. The power was out at my house for a while that day. I remember listening to the radio on battery power. I had a music station on. I remember that the DJ broke in mid-song to announce that the space shuttle Challenger had exploded. It seemed unreal. A little while later the power came back on and I went to the living room to watch the news on TV. It seemed less unreal then.
The only other time I remember a DJ breaking in mid-song was on 9/11 to report that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center.
