FEBT Rockhill Furnace Restoration Work Session, September 21-22, 2002

These photos are presented in roughly chronological order. Person and vehicle identifications are always in the order from left to right. All photos taken with a Canon Eos RebelXS camera with either a Tamron 28-80mm lens or a Canon 75-300mm lens. Film is Kodak Gold 200 or Max 400. All photos in this section copyright 2002 by William Adams.

This weekend was a real washout, so work shifted indoors, more or less.

Track 1 doors [2002sep21,door] 327x480 (34k) - 613x900 (81k)
The north doors for track one get a new frame member.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh1] 327x480 (44k) - 613x900 (122k)
This view shows the problematic column supporting the door northwest door for track zero. It is in bad shape at the bottom, is kicking in, and sits on a loose block, which is on more loose fill, with no foundation. The first step in fixing the column is to build up a solid footing. A three foot deep hole was dug the entire width of the door. It was filled with an initial six inches of concrete.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh2] 327x480 (41k) - 614x900 (104k)
A view of the new theshold/footing from outside. In the foreground is the loose material that was excavated.

Track Zero [2002sep21,ties] 600x414 (50k) - 1200x828 (127k)
The next step was to install fresh ties to maintain track integrity, particularly as the hole was already dug.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh3] 600x409 (37k) - 1200x817 (92k)
After placing a foam form, more concrete went into the hole.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh4] 600x413 (50k) - 1200x826 (125k)
Yet more concrete goes into the form.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh5] 327x480 (36k) - 614x900 (85k)
Keep the concrete coming!

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh6] 600x409 (56k) - 1200x817 (167k)
Finally the forms are topped off.

Track Zero [2002sep21,thresh7] 600x410 (48k) - 1200x820 (129k)
A smooth finish is applied and the threshold is done.

Car shop windows [2002sep21,windows1] 327x480 (28k) - 613x900 (71k)
Progress on the windows outdoors was intermittent, dodging the rain. This view shows typical conditions with the rain coming off the eaves and pooling. Those who worked on the windows got a cold shower and would have been drier if they had gone for a swim in the creek.

Sashes [2002sep21,sash1] 600x409 (35k) - 1200x817 (81k)
So instead of outdoor work, the crew worked on repairing sashes inside the car shop. Some sashes were surplus and put to use where needed, others were original sashes which had fallen apart and were recovered from the shop floor.

Sashes [2002sep21,sash2] 600x410 (36k) - 1200x819 (87k)
Cutting glass for the sashes.

Sashes [2002sep21,sash3] 600x409 (39k) - 1200x817 (92k)
Plenty of sash work to keep busy, and for some a break from the concrete work.

Car shop windows [2002sep21,windows2] 600x409 (34k) - 1200x817 (91k)
Despite the rain, the windows have now been closed up except for one remaining sash. It would be completely rebuilt using the original 4 edges and everything else new.

South shed [2002sep21,shed1] 600x405 (57k) - 1200x908 (160k)
The small south shed was completed, except for painting, which would be done the following weekend in order to be ready for the FEBT Reunion and EBT's Fall Event.

South shed [2002sep21,shed2] 600x406 (48k) - 1200x812 (134k)
The replica window was installed in the south wall.

South shed [2002sep21,shed3] 327x480 (43k) - 613x900 (108k)
The rear wall got some additional siding repairs, and replacement of missing trim and trim that had been cut away for the external brace. The new internal brace is visible through the window.
