FEBT Rockhill Furnace Restoration, November 9-10, 2002

These photos are presented in roughly chronological order. Person and vehicle identifications are always in the order from left to right. All photos taken with a Canon Eos RebelXS camera with either a Tamron 28-80mm lens or a Canon 75-300mm lens. Film is Kodak Gold 200 or Max 400. All photos in this section copyright 2002 by William Adams.

This was the final work session for the FEBT in Rockhill Furnace in 2002. Work focused on getting things buttoned up for the winter.

Car shop doors [2002nov9,doors1] 600x410 (60k) - 1200x819 (163k)
The dangling siding over the track zero doors is removed to repair the header.

The new header is constructed from three 2x10's. The yellow scaffolding was rented for this weekend, and proved so useful that FEBT purchased it's own set for the 2003 season (and it has been put to a great deal of use in 2003).

With the new header in place, above where the missing header had once been, the old siding is trimmed and reinstalled.

This view from inside the car shop shows the new, higher header and one of the door extensions.

The second door extension is being built to fit.

Car shop doors [2002nov9,doors6] 600x412 (52k) - 1200x824 (156k)
The doors finished for the year. The track 1 doors received additional siding repairs, and the track zero doors sport the new extensions to improve clearance for tall railcars.

Car shop doors [2002nov9,doors7] 329x480 (38k) - 617x900 (102k)
The doors now close tightly. From the side, there's still a little twist to them, but some of the EBT's charm has to be preserved as well :-)

Tacking strips [2002nov9,strips] 327x480 (38k) - 614x900 (94k)
Tacking strips are being cut to aid the installation of plastic sheeting in some of the worse shop windows to fend off the winter until the windows can be repaired.

Car shop [2002nov9,windows3] 330x480 (30k) - 619x900 (70k)
Windows in the boiler shop are sealed with plastic.

The last of the 15 shop windows is puttied.

Other windows receive a final coat of white paint.

Now that's a pretty sight! A few windows still need a final coat of paint, but they're all weathertight. Though it is unknown if any noticed it, these windows formed one of the backgrounds for several photo charters in the Fall and following Spring. A mighty bit more photogenic than what had been. Let's take a quick peek back at what they looked like 5 months ago.

Small shed [2002nov9,shed1] 600x415 (69k) - 1200x829 (197k)
The small shed across from the coaling station was actually completed at an impromptu session just before the Fall Event. My photos of it from the Fall Event aren't very illustrative, so I shot it again. Compare the roof line of the near (leveled) shed, and that of the the further shed that has yet to be leveled.

Small shed [2002nov9,shed2] 600x412 (57k) - 1200x823 (170k)
The shed is just looking great. I can say that without the need to be humble, as I didn't work on it myself (I hope those two facts aren't correlated :-) Let's take a quick peek back at what it looked like not long ago.

Small shed [2002nov9,shed3] 600x411 (56k) - 1200x822 (164k)
The lean of the larger shed is apparent now that its neighbor is (mostly) plumb.
