Joller [2002apr6,jollerlow]
600x402 (91k) -
1200x803 (258k)
This is the cut on the lower of two grades to the Miller & Knepp mine
at Joller. If you've visited the area, you're sure to remember the
highway's hairpin turn on edge of the ridge. This cut is just below that
turn. The upper grade is visible at road level immediately west of the turn.
Hopper 882 [2002apr6,car882]
600x412 (57k) -
1200x823 (161k)
Restored hopper 882 in Rockhill yard.
Hopper 1052 [2002apr6,car1052]
600x408 (61k) -
1200x816 (172k)
Restored hopper 1052 in Rockhill yard. The "ROCK" stencil designates this
hopper for gannister rock service, instead of the usual coal, to prevent
cross contamination of the loads.
Toolroom [2002apr6,toolroom]
600x402 (51k) -
1200x804 (143k)
This small wing off the machine shop is the tool room. In the preceding
week it had been raised from it's sunken position, placed on a foundation,
had the siding patched and repainted, and windows restored. For details
on this project, see Nevin Byers' "Rockhill Report" at
www.parails.com.
Robertsdale [2002apr6,rob1]
324x480 (25k) -
608x900 (73k)
The stars were out as FEBT members gathered for a slide show by
Chris Coleman.
Robertsdale [2002apr6,rob2]
600x410 (42k) -
1200x820 (120k)
That station sure looks warm and inviting on a day that saw a few flurries.
The new scalepit pump box beside the bay window was installed November 2001.
Rt522 at Blacklog [2002apr6,blacklog]
600x405 (58k) -
1200x810 (182k)
The Shade Gap branch's crossing of Rt 522 at the east end of Blacklog Narrows.
Rt 522 is to be realigned here in the near future, rising 5 feet and preventing
restoration of track beyond this point for either the EBT or the RTM.
A passenger shelter stood on the far side of the road, to the left of the
rail. A spur also once split off here to the right to service a limestone
quarry which fed the Rockhill iron furnaces.
Shirleysburg [2002apr6,shirley]
600x408 (58k) -
1200x815 (183k)
This location is directly across the old (abandoned) Rt 522 from the Old Baptist
Cemetary in Shirleysburg. It was recently cleared and is now identifiable
as the location of the photos in Deane Mellander's book "Slim Gauge Survivor"
on pages 64 and 65.
Mt. Union [2002apr6,mtu]
600x404 (87k) -
1200x808 (257k)
Lance Myers clearing brush for the Mount Union Connecting in Mt. Union.
Go Lance!
PRR [2002apr6,prr]
600x406 (49k) -
1200x812 (141k)
The Pennsylvania Railroad built this new bridge over the Juniata River when
it realigned its main line through Mt. Union, eliminating grade crossings.
It still sees heavy traffic under Norfolk Southern, and one blasted by just after
taking this photo. The road at left is the new Rt 522 bypass of Mt. Union, running
through the former site of the NARCO refractory. A standard gauge rail
spur from the north end of the EBT's yard once dropped down and passed
under the same arch now occupied by Rt 522.
This photo was taken from the highway bridge to Kistler,
which was built on the abutments of the original PRR bridge.
