M4 Assists [99oct30,m4assist] 600x408 (42k) - 1200x816 (110k)
Putting away a steam engine requires the help of a diesel. This day, M-4 has the honors. After having it's fire pulled, #14 is first turned on the table and pulled into its stall. With the turntable cleared and relined for the lead track, the M-4 moves onto it and is aligned with #14. The M-4 then couples to #14 and pulls it back out of the stall.

#14 Blowdown [99oct30,14blow] 600x408 (43k) - 1200x816 (127k)
With #14 positioned, the blowdown valve is opened and with a deafening roar the boiler pressure forces out the boiler water, which flashes to steam as it reaches atmospheric pressure. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to empty the boiler. When complete, the M-4 pushed with all its might to get #14 into its stall. The stall doors were rolled down, M-4 backed off the turntable and puttered into the darkness of the yard.
