Wray's Hill Tunnel [99feb,wrayw]
x480 (k) -
x900 (k)
This is the west portal of Wray's Hill tunnel.
Wray's Hill Tunnel [99feb,wrayint]
600x (k) -
1200x (k)
You can tell it's been cold with these gigantic icicles. They drip into
a large pool of water at the floor. The original height of the tunnel
can be seen from the tops of the timber props, the area above has been
created by collapse.
Side Dump Car [99feb,car12]
328x480 (36k) -
615x900 (80k)
This is the underside of the northernmost side dump car in the Mt. Union
yard (car #12). The car is standard gauge and sits on the special
interchange trucks. Note the side bearing pad additions overtop of the
sideframe.
Saltillo Station [99feb,salt1]
600x404 (48k) -
1200x808 (130k)
The track side of the Saltillo station. The roof continues to
deteriorate and sag.
Saltillo Station [99feb,salt2]
600x409 (57k) -
1200x817 (159k)
The back side of the Saltillo station.
Sideling Hill [99feb,sideview]
600x409 (55k) -
1200x817 (126k)
The view from the eastern approach to Sideling Hill Tunnel is quit nice, though
with a little tree cutting and from the seat of a railcar it'd be much nicer.
Sideling Hill Tunnel [99feb,side4]
600x409 (99k)
Here is the eastern portal of the Sideling hill tunnel. The rolling door used to stop drafts and prevent water from freezing is still in place.
Sideling Hill Tunnel [99feb,side1]
327x480 (41k) -
594x873 (94k)
This view of Sideling Hill Tunnel eastern portal shows the various liners
in use. Nearest is concrete, with wooden props and ceiling planking beyond,
and raw rock beyond all the way to the western portal.
Sideling Hill Tunnel [99feb,side2]
326x480 (33k) -
593x873 (71k)
Here is a telephoto view down the tunnel from the eastern end. Some
icicles can be seen at the far western end. Though hard to see after
scanning, the stretch between the well lit forground and the curve at
the far end is straight.
Sideling Hill Tunnel [99feb,side3]
394x480 (46k) -
594x723 (77k)
This is the western portal of the Sideling Hill Tunnel. There has been some
cleaving of the rock at the opening, and the track is buried under 4 feet
of gravel washed down from the road above it. This debris prevents the
water from draining out, resulting in a pond. A few icicles indicate the
season.
Coles tankhouse [99feb,coles1]
600x408 (85k) -
1200x816 (234k)
The only surviving EBT tankhouse at Coles.
Coles tankhouse [99feb,coles2]
600x434 (78k) -
1200x868 (213k)
The rear of the tankhouse.
Wood Mule Barn [99feb,wood1]
600x407 (81k) -
1200x814 (231k)
This barn stabled the mules which pulled the mine carts for the nearby mines.
It was burned by an arsonist in 1993. This is the north end of the barn.
Robertsdale Yard [99feb,rob1]
600x405 (83k) -
1200x810 (227k)
This is the south end of the Robertsdale yard (looking north). The
creek is to the right.
Rockhill Yard [99feb,vinehop]
359x480 (57k) -
674x900 (161k)
Covered in vines, this hopper has the distinction of being the
southernmost piece of equipment on the railroad. It's at the end
of the string of hoppers below the Rockhill coal dock.
Wray's Hill Tunnel [99feb,wray1]
600x403 (83k) -
1200x806 (223k)
This is the eastern portal of Wray's Hill Tunnel. The rolling door and
frame has fallen down onto the tracks.
Wray's Hill Tunnel [99feb,wray2]
321x480 (21k) -
601x900 (47k)
A telephoto view into the eastern end of Wray's Hill Tunnel. There is a
fall near the far end of the timber lining, but light from the far end was
visible. Guess who didn't bring his tripod along.
Wray's Hill [99feb,wray3]
324x480 (56k) -
608x900 (140k)
Hiking down from the eastern portal of Wray's Hill Tunnel, the setting
sun backlights the track.
Washout [99feb,aughwash]
600x404 (69k)
This washout is just north of the crossing at Aughwick Mills Rd.
The rails and culvert look great, but the middle part is missing a little
something.
Washout [99feb,pumpwash]
326x480 (51k) -
612x900 (124k)
This washout at the crossing of Pumping Station Rd is courtesy of
Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Nice bridge, but the decking
is supposed to be UNDER the rails, not on top!
That tree might prove inconvenient as well.
Old Baptist Cemetary [99feb,cem]
600x405 (59k) -
1200x810 (174k)
At the north end of Shirleysburg, the EBT mainline divides the
Old Baptist Cemetary on a low fill. The cemetary was recently
restored by the Fort Shirley Lions.
Shade Gap Section House [99feb,shadesec]
600x404 (65k)
This is the Shade Gap section house. This view is from the
road crossing, looking east down the former ROW. The sites of the station,
watertank, freight house, and coal unloading tipple are behind the camera.
Probably Not Starr Mine [99feb,starr]
600x405 (35k)
This is some mine opening, evidenced by the props, located next to the
mainline at the south switch of the Rocky Ridge siding. This opening is
at track level, extending about 15 feet into the hillside, filled with
mud and water. There are remains of some wooden structure above it on
the hill, with a possible filled in pit or similar feature. I am no
longer convinced this is the Starr mine or any known mine, though I am
convinced that it's there.
Rocky Ridge Station [99feb,rockys]
325x480 (64k) -
609x900 (167k)
This is the south wall of the Rocky Ridge station, which faced the mainline.
The track can be seen running along the very bottom of the image.
Rocky Ridge Station [99feb,rockye]
600x405 (77k) -
1200x809 (207k)
This is the east wall of the Rocky Ridge station.
Rocky Ridge Station [99feb,rockyn]
600x405 (92k) -
1200x810 (259k)
This view overlooks the north wall, which has fallen out towards the camera
at the bottom of the image. The tracks can be traced behind the station,
crossing the bridge at the upper right corner.
Rocky Ridge Station [99feb,rockyw]
600x405 (91k) -
1200x810 (244k)
This is the west side of the station. This wall had been gone years earlier,
so what's visible is the second floor and the roof. The tunnel portal is
behind the peak of the south wall.
