Since my father was very active in Railways to Yesterday during the first ten years of my life I spent a great deal of time around both the streetcars of RTY and the Mikes of the EBT. However, one of the more vivid memories is actually of the "Pink Panther." This small critter from the Brookville Locomotive Works was so titled due to an earlier pink paint scheme. I remember it as always being painted a green and yellow though. This particular story starts with a desire to move the 4-car Liberty Liner about 25 feet or so to clear another track. The Liner was yet to be operable so the Brookville was brought over to do the job. After spotting and connecting the drawbar an attempt is made to move the train. The lightweight Brookville did nothing but spin. They started throwing buckets of spikes and tools on to weight her down. Eventually, every man in the area was hanging on in whatever manner possible carrying whatever extra weight he could hold. As the dozen or so men tried to hold her down one man was throwing sand on the rail until finally they got it to move the 25 feet. It was pretty good entertainment, now I just wished I had known how to work the movie camera at that age. Andy Van Scyoc May 10, 1997
